Christian (47 years old) is an Indonesian citizen who was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta District Court for his involvement in the smuggling of psychotropics in the form of ecstasy through wheat flour import activities. The ecstasy was sent from Hong Kong under the guise of wheat flour to be sold in Indonesia. After arriving in Indonesia, the goods were taken to a warehouse in the Cengkareng area of West Java, but were eventually uncovered, and Christian was arrested by the police.
During the legal process that Christian underwent with the police, he admitted that he was subjected to torture and threats by the officers. The police told Christian to confess that he was Christian AWE or Christopher (someone else). Later, the police presented a suspect's letter to Christian for him to sign, but he refused. As a result of this refusal, Christian was threatened with being beaten again.
Unfortunately, in Christian's case, when the first-instance court sentenced him to death, he filed an appeal, but his lawyer at the time did not include the Appeal Memorandum, causing Christian to lose the opportunity to fully defend himself. The Jakarta High Court ultimately upheld the death sentence. Christian then pursued cassation efforts, but his lawyer did not submit the Cassation Memorandum to Christian for him to read before it was submitted to the Supreme Court. In the end, the cassation memorandum was rejected by the Supreme Court.
